From the days of only being able to choose from Red roses, Pink roses, White roses and Yellow roses they have evolved, perfected in a sense, and they are now available in just about any color you can imagine and many combos of colors. What color is your love?

We have the rose to express that perfectly. This months’ suggestions for Valentines and beyond. A few of my favorite varieties, Red Freedom Roses, large headed with many petals, vibrant in color and the classic rose shape. Vendella Roses, it's not white, it is a creamy white, almost off white. A true favorite with a large head and petal count and long vase life. Skyline Roses, its’ not blue, it is a lemony yellow that shares all of the attributes of our Freedom Rose. Cool Water, beside a great name its color is an all time favorite, a true delicate lavender color with a subtle lavender fragrance. Versillia Roses, it's a beautiful peach colored rose that has replaced Osiana due to its long vase life and beautiful peach color.. My last suggestion for your love is the pink rose called Sophie Rose, a true rich pink that always opens to the size of my fist minimum, the most petals of any rose I have ever experienced and if cared for properly they last and last.

To make all your roses and flowers last they must be handled properly, and if you follow these simple suggestions the colors of your love will provide much enjoyment. If the roses you receive are in a vase do nothing except add water for the first few days, after three days or so you will double their vase life by treating them to a fresh cut on the bottom of the stem, the secret to long lasting roses is hydration and a clogged stem from reverse photosynthesis where the chlorophyll leaches out of the plant and into the water and then clogs the stems, fresh cuts and fresh water will prevent the premature wilting of your rose. If you receive unarranged roses just make sure that you give them a fresh cut upon arrival and then again in about 3 or 4 days. MOST IMPORTANT CHANGE THE WATER EVERYDAY, YES EVERYDAY! AND KEEP IN A COOL LOCATION. IF YOU DO YOUR PART, THE ROSES WILL DO THERE PART!

How many rose varieties do you think there are? Half of flower buyers say there are less than 50 rose varieties, according to the Society of American Florists (SAF), the national trade association for flowers. In fact, as a result of a rose “baby boom” in the production of roses in the 1990s, there are about 120 varieties now available.

Red remains the most popular rose color, especially among men, and 62 percent of women prefer yellows, pinks, peaches and whites, an SAF survey found. Lavenders and oranges are also emerging favorites.

Rose colors traditionally have special meanings. But today, the new colors are too numerous to have specific symbolism. Now, it’s simply the sentiment that gives the gift of a rose its meaning.

Learn more about the changing color palette at http://www.aboutflowers.com/holidays_b5c.html.

Make Sure Your Flowers are the Freshest!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 162px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vPvgeN3IgLc/Txm1PTyIVqI/AAAAAAAAAII/9jSl20jbjqA/s200/floralmotif.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5699786078027273890" />

We are exactly twenty-one days into the New Year! Everyone is pressed for time these days. So many things to do and not enough hours to do them. Does this sound familiar. It does to me and I know that when I can consolidate my errands, it seems I can get more done.

So what could possibly be wrong with picking up some fresh flowers while at the supermarket. It seems every supermarket has a fresh flower department. Granted the flowers often seem tired and sometimes lackluster, but the convenience of saving some time is too much to pass up.

The problem is undetectable to you except that the flowers do not last very long. The reason has to do with chemistry. Most, if not all, supermarkets are storing the flowers in big refrigerators that also store fruit and vegetables. The problem is that fruits and vegetables such as apples, bananas, etc. produce an invisible gas called ethylene. This gas is what helps ripen fruits and vegetables. Good for fruit, bad for flowers. It robs flowers of valuable vase life. So the few minutes of time savings and even possibly price savings is not such a bargain when after a few days you are throwing out your flowers and wondering why flowers never last very long.

This is why I want to inform our valuable customers, to take a few extra minutes to stop by or call ahead and we'll have it ready. Shop for flowers at a Flower Shop. Only a florist, whose main business is the proper care and handling of flowers, will have flowers that will offer you the best value. Save your grocery shopping for the supermarkets and wisely shop for flowers at a Flower Shop.

Impact of Flowers & Plants on Workplace Productivity

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 133px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LnOSRRFGzWM/TxXIB14mhOI/AAAAAAAAAH8/595gx0OnsH8/s200/working.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5698680837477139682" />

University Research Shows Flowers and Plants
Inspire Better Business Ideas

Flowers & Plants Increase Workplace Productivity

In 2003, Society of American Florists partnered with an internationally recognized research team at Texas A&M University to learn how flowers and plants in the workplace impact productivity and problem solving. The exciting results of this groundbreaking study:

Problem-solving skills, idea generation and creative performance improve substantially in workplace environments that include flowers and plants.
Specifically, both men and women who work in environments with flowers and plants demonstrate more innovative thinking as compared to environments with sculpture or no decorative objects.
Men who participated in the study generated 30 percent more ideas when working in environments with flowers and plants than ones without.
While men generate a greater abundance of ideas, the research shows that women generate more creative, flexible solutions to problems in workplace environments with flowers and plants.
As a result, flowers and plants prove to be natural additions to any work environment.

Roger Ulrich, Ph.D."The research shows that flowers and plants can be important in the most meaningful way to businesses in the modern economy," says Roger Ulrich, Ph.D., behavioral scientist and the study's lead researcher. Claudius didn't want men to marry during wartime because he believed single men made better soldiers. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret wedding ceremonies. For this, Valentine was jailed and then executed by order of the Emperor on February 14. While in jail, he wrote a love note to the jailor's daughter signing it, "From your Valentine." Sound familiar?

More Valentine's Day-related History
The ancient Romans celebrated the Feast of Lupercalia on February 14th in honor of Juno, the queen of the Roman gods and goddesses. Juno was also the goddess of women and marriage. Many believe the 'X' symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who couldn't write their names signed in front of a witness with an 'X.' The 'X' was then kissed to show their sincerity.
Girls of medieval times ate bizarre foods on St. Valentine's Day to make them dream of their future spouse.
In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression "to wear your heart on your sleeve."
In 1537, England's King Henry VII officially declared February 14th the holiday of St. Valentine's Day.
Chocolate Casanova, well known as "The World's Greatest Lover," ate chocolate to make him virile.
Physicians of the 1800's commonly advised their patients to eat chocolate to calm their pining for lost love.
Richard Cadbury produced the first box of chocolates for Valentine's Day in the late 1800's.
More than 35 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold for Valentine's Day.
Over $1 billion worth of chocolate is purchased for Valentine's Day in the U.S.
Flowers
73% of people who buy flowers for Valentine's Day are men, while only 27 percent are women.
15% of U.S. women send themselves flowers on Valentine's Day.
Roses
The red rose was the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love.
Red roses are considered the flower of love because the color red stands for strong romantic feelings.
189 million stems of roses are sold in the U.S. on Valentine's Day.
California produces 60 percent of American roses, but the greater number sold on Valentine's Day in the United States are imported, mostly from South America.
Approximately 110 million roses, mostly red, will be sold and delivered within the three-day Valentine's Day time period.
Greeting Cards
Approximately one billion Valentines are sent out worldwide each year according to estimates by the U.S. Greeting Card Association. That's second only to Christmas.
Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all Valentines.
Teachers will receive the most Valentine's Day cards, followed by children, mothers, wives, sweethearts and pets.
And... More fun facts about Valentine's Day
In addition to the United States, Valentine's Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, France, Australia, Denmark, and Italy.
The most fantastic gift of love is the Taj Mahal in India.

January Flowers

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 113px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MwZogUxLiDc/TwNNBQB_0ZI/AAAAAAAAAHY/bQH6f1gdsn0/s200/01_%2BJanuary%2BFlowers%2B05.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693479037804990866" />

Winter Blues? Flowers Bring a Burst of Spring into your Home

Don't let cool weather get you down: Brighten your day with fresh flowers. A behavioral research study conducted by Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D., of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, reveals that people feel more compassionate toward others, have less worry and anxiety, and feel less depressed when fresh flowers are present in the home.

“Other research has proven that flowers make people happy when they receive them,” Etcoff says. “What we didn’t know is that spending a few days with flowers in the home can affect a wide variety of feelings.”

Rebecca Cole is the author of “Flower Power” and co-host of Discovery Channel's “Surprise by Design.” “The Harvard research is proof that if we live in places that lift our spirits, we can live happier, healthier lives,” Cole says. “Fresh flowers are the perfect everyday accessory for any budget – they add color, fragrance and style – and now we know they even increase energy and compassion.”

Amazing Christmas Story of Christmas Tradition and Flower Giving

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 152px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4ZKU9g22BuQ/TvODY1gHX2I/AAAAAAAAAHM/9XhYAZ2Oi_U/s200/poinsettias_large.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5689035217000947554" />

A Christmas story that explains the meaning of giving flowers at Christmas and why it is such a great tradition.

The legend of the poinsettia and the gift of flowers comes from Mexico.

"It tells of a girl named Maria and her little brother Pablo. They were very poor but always looked forward to the Christmas festival. Each year a large Manger Nativity scene was set up in the village church. The days before Christmas were filled with parades and parties. The two children loved Christmas but were always saddened because they had no money to buy presents. They especially wished that they could give something to the church for the Baby Jesus. But they had nothing.
One Christmas Eve, Maria and Pablo set out for church to attend the service. On their way they picked some weeds growing along the roadside and decided to take them as their gift to the Baby Jesus in the manger scene. Of course they were teased by other children when they arrived with their gift, but they said nothing for they knew they had given what they could. Maria and Pablo began placing the green plants around the Manger and miraculously, the green top leaves turned into bright red petals, and soon the manger was surrounded by beautiful star-like flowers and so we see them today."

Just another Christmas miracle...Do you believe? Let Mr. Bokay Flowers and Greenhouse garnish your home or office with a beautiful, Poinsettia plant in red, white or pink.

Cold Lips? – Send Tulips and Feel the Heat!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 199px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9LlNxLyZWZU/TvDV3z1OWkI/AAAAAAAAAHA/BJXJokWqEfY/s200/redtulips.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688281484151904834" />

Burrrrr!! According to a recent study by Society of American Florists, 92 percent of women remember the last time they received flowers. Because they are a time when memories are made, there is no better time than the holidays for sending a sentiment of caring.

“Sending flowers for the holidays is the gift of emotion,” Mr. Bokay said. “The season has a way of conjuring up feelings of nostalgia. We think about Grandma's house, the cozy fireplace, the great feast and good times with family and friends. Flowers and plants are the finishing touch that make the holidays complete.”

From wreaths to centerpieces, bulb plants and topiaries, Mr. Bokay shares his best bets for holiday winners.

Amaryllis and Paper White Narcissus are examples of bulb plants that if given after Thanksgiving or in early December, will bloom just in time for Christmas. Cyclamen, Kalanchoe and Christmas Cactus are other great flowering plant options.

Mr. Bokay's designers have the expertise to design an arrangement incorporating fruits and vegetables to create a winter harvest feeling.

Candles added to a centerpiece create a sense of warmth and glow to the holiday table. Traditional. Intimate. Those are the words most families will keep in mind this year as they celebrate Christmas, says Rebecca Cole, host of the Discovery Channel’s “Surprise By Design.”

“Because we're returning to our roots and hosting intimate celebrations at home, we'll see more traditional colors, and greenery, whose scents will bring us back to our childhood,” according to Cole, who also is a contributor to the “Today” show.

Don’t forget: Plants make a best-bet holiday gift for friends, family members and co-workers. We recommend cyclamen, kalanchoe, poinsettia, Christmas cactus, holly, spruce, boxwood, amaryllis, narcissus paperwhites, tulips and hyacinths.

“Sending flowers for the holidays is the gift of emotion,” Cole said. “The season has a way of conjuring up feelings of nostalgia. We think about grandma's house, the cozy fireplace, the great feast and good times with family and friends. Flowers and plants are the finishing touch that make the holidays complete.”

Our team of trained professionals is ready to help you customize your order. All parts of the plant were tested, including the leaves and sap.

According to POISINDEX, the national information center for poison control centers, a child would have to ingest 500 to 600 leaves to exceed the experimental doses that found no toxicity.

As with any non-food product, however, the poinsettia is not meant to be eaten and can cause varying degrees of discomfort; BOKAY FLORIST AND GREENHOUSE

Thanksgiving Day savings for our special customers!

When you gather with loved ones for Thanksgiving this year, be sure to include flowers in your plans. We’ve got tips on how to get your house ready for the big day.

When you gather with loved ones for Thanksgiving this year, be sure to include flowers in your plans. We’ve got tips on how to get your house ready for the big day:

Choose seasonal flowers and plants. Chrysanthemums, gerbera daisies, roses, carnations, alstroemeria, lilies, wheat, solidago, monte casino and hypericum berries are pitch-perfect for Thanksgiving, as are potted plants such as chrysanthemums, kelanchoes and cyclamen.

Clear the clutter. Organizing expert Vicki Norris suggests several simple tricks that can help keep your home’s public spaces, such as your entryway, living room or family room, neat for holiday traffic. Our favorite tip? “Placing flowers or a favorite accessory where clutter typically congregates does two things: it brightens the room and prevents future messes from settling there.”

Accessorize key areas. Play up a large table by placing a long, narrow centerpiece in the center of the table. Add a few smaller accent pieces or candles on each side of the arrangement for an added effect. To create drama and variety, place a topiary at one end of the table leading to a cluster of small potted plants, then two smaller topiaries with candles leading to a tray of votive candles and flower petals. Our team of trained professionals is ready to help you customize your Thanksgiving order. There has been such a proliferation of 800# "Order Collectors" that are reducing the value of flowers by wire. Everyone wants in on the game, from the biggest 800 number companies to internet order collectors, everyone BUT florists! They have figured out how to get a large percent of YOUR money when you send flowers through them. We think they are parasites, and they are the reason for flower prices increasing.

There is a disturbing new trend now among the big wire services. It seems they aren't happy making the 7% of the value of wired flowers, plus monthly fees and advertising revenues paid by their members. So they have started their own services to collect orders, competing with their own members for profits. They are advertising in places like search engine banners, gasoline company credit card statements, direct email, phone bills, television, America Online, you name it. This is big money. YOUR money.

What we recommend is using a professional full service florist with a good understanding of the industry and the products, with experience in long distance flower deliveries. This is often designated by a florist's ranking within a wire service, such as our Top ranking with FTD. This comes from years and years and thousands upon thousands of long distance delivery orders. We have a list of Preferred florists nationwide that is second to none, and by using this we can guarantee the final product. Simply choosing an untested florist in the recipient's city is no guarantee of quality. Years of experience is. This is why we can say...

We Deliver the Freshest Flowers - and We Guarantee
<img width='1' height='1' between the turkey, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie you've planned for Thanksgiving this year, be sure to leave room for an eye-catching seasonal centerpiece. We have the most beautiful Thanksgiving flowers in stock now, including chrysanthemums, bittersweet, gerbera daisies, roses, carnations, alstroemeria, lilies, wheat, solidago, monte casino and marigolds. These flowers (and more!) are the perfect complement to your holiday décor. For instance, you can accessorize a large table by placing a long, narrow centerpiece in the center of the table. Add a few smaller accent pieces or candles on each side of the arrangement for an added effect.

To find out about our current specials or talk more about custom designs, visit our Web site, www.MrBokay.com, stop by our store or call us today at (800) 350-7251.

Be Thoughtful. If you were a farmer, you’d be out in the fields about now working to harvest all of your flowers, fruit, veggies, or grapes. You’d want to bring in that bountiful harvest to make sure you were stock full of abundance and happiness throughout the fall and winter months.

While you may not need to don a pair of overalls or climb on a tractor, seeing yourself like the farmer of your life can be hugely beneficial to your happiness. At the beginning of the year, you had an empty field, you planted seeds, and you watered and fed them all summer long. You’ve put a lot of time, energy, money and heart into creating your field of opportunities and dreams this year, and you want to make sure come Dec 31st you are full up of abundance and happiness, too.

Here are four ways to help you bring in your happy harvest this fall:
1. REFLECT on your bountiful field. Take a moment to close your eyes and see yourself standing in front of your field, full of the realized or soon to be realized dreams and goals you planted earlier this year.

2. REJOICE about all you have created already. Gratitude is one of the most powerful emotions you have for creating happiness… it is like watering your happy garden with love. Take a moment and celebrate all the bounty you have already brought in this year.

3. RESOURCE yourself wisely for the remainder of the year. As you stand looking at the field of opportunities at your fingertips, ask yourself, “Where is the BEST place for me to focus my time, energy, money and heart this fall? What’s going to yield the bounty that leads to my happiness?” Write your answer down and make a commitment to focus your resources on bringing in your Happy Harvest.

4. REMIND yourself daily of your Happy Harvest with something physical you can see every day.

While I suppose you could put a basket of potatoes on your table to signify your harvest, having a vibrant, colorful living reminder is a much better way to go. Weekly, throughout October, place a super-abundant-feeling bouquet of flowers on your dining room, coffee or kitchen table to remind yourself of the bounty you are harvesting for yourself this year.

Halloween Decorating Ideas from Mr. Bokay

October is Full of Blooming Holidays

<img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; Today, FTD.com, Teleflora.com, and 1-800flowers.com all own and operate for profit companies. Similar to travel agents, these wire services main function is to act as agents. The profit is, therefore, the difference between the advertised price they charge the customer and the discounted price they pay there agent, the florist.

You're a Smart Shopper...

You know that the best flower arrangement value, quality and service comes from dealing directly with the florist. Why would you want to trust that special arrangement to someone sitting behind a computer terminal that doesn't know a gerbera daisy from a tulip.

We are the actual florist that makes the flowers. Your satisfaction, we guarantee.

Telemarketers, like the wire services, act as "travel agents" to the customer. When you place an order, they charge you, the customer, the advertised price, but they send us, the florist a discounted price. You do not get what you are paying for.
In addition, they all charge additional service charges.

If you want to save money, make sure the local florists website is a real local florist and not a telemarketer. We are a real local flower shop. We're the ones actually creating the flowers. When you contact us, rest assure, you are reaching a real florist who knows about flowers, knows what is in season, knows about best quality and value. Once you have determined if there will be a service at a funeral home, it is acceptable to send flowers to the funeral home for the viewings. You should try and order the flowers promptly so that it is delivered in time for the visitation. Often, there may only be one or two viewings, so it is important to order early.

2. It is acceptable& customary to send traditional funeral flowers, vases or baskets filled with fresh flowers, green or flowering plants or fruit & gourmet baskets to the funeral home. The larger traditional pieces will be placed around the casket during the viewing, smaller table arrangements and such can be taken home by the family. Sometimes, larger pieces are taken to the church or cemetary for additional display after the services.

3. When you send flowers to a residence do not order funeral type flowers such as a funeral spray or a cross or a funeral basket. Funeral arrangements are typically one side and designed to be placed against a wall not suitable for a residence. Instead, consider sending a vase of assorted white flowers, or an assorted mixture of flowers to a residence. Other popular choices include green or flowering plants and fruit baskets or gourmet baskets with or without fruit are also popular choices.

4. For Jewish families, and if the family is sitting Shiva you should send a Shiva basket which is basically a fruit & gourmet basket that should be kosher unless you know it does not matter. Other choices can include a green plant, such as a peace lily or even a vase of white flowers is acceptable.

5. Traditional funeral arrangements are normally a one sided design as they are typically placed against a wall. You normally want funeral flowers that go to the funeral home to generally be large and showy. Traditional floor baskets normally seen in a funeral home start at $100.00, but can be designed to be larger or smaller depending on your budget. Even though you may have found something to send for forty dollars you need to consider that your arrangement will be placed next to others and many people will spend more.

6. Many people are often "stuck" on how to express their sentiment of sympathy. The card message is personal but some ideas on writing the card include phrases such as: 'our thoughts and prayers are with you' or 'with deepest sympathy'. You need not address the card specifically to anyone as the funeral director will collect all the cards and give them to the family. When you send sympathy flowers, the card should clearly indicate who is sending the flowers (include your last name and or company name if appropriate) as it can be confusing to the family during a stressful time. Another suggestion is to also put your address on the card to make it easier for the family when they send out thank you cards.

7. If you are sending flowers to a relative a would like to place a banner on the piece it should state your relationship to the deceased. For example if your uncle dies, the banner should read "Beloved Uncle" and not "From Nieces and Nephews" Customary banners are 'Beloved Mother', 'Dearest Friend' etc. It will make the sympathy flowers you are sending look special so you should consider if it is appropriate for you.

8. When you want to send flowers to a funeral home, you can call the funeral home and ask for a few flower shops they recommend. This way you can speak directly to a florist about your order and a referral from the undertaker should help assure that you will get a beautiful arrangement. It has been my experience that undertakers see many different flower shops' work and can guide you on the better ones to call.

9. If the funeral home is trying to sell flowers you should politely say no thanks. The funeral directors working for the funeral homes get commissions on flowers that are sold, the funeral home also keeps some of your money as commission on your flower order instead of it going into the sympathy flowers. The funeral home employees don't know anything about flowers, what is in season or in stock so you are paying a premium for lousy service. It is always important to remember to order flowers directly from a flower shop, they can guide you in ordering the appropriate flowers.

10. Often the obituary listing may mention that "in lieu" of flowers to make a donation to some charitable cause. This should not dissuade you from sending flowers to the funeral home if you desire. Nothing is sadder to see than a wake with few or no flowers. Nothing conveys a sense of sympathy and love more than beautiful flowers at a wake. You can still make a charitable donation to a worthy cause, but the flowers speak volumes about your feelings.

If you would like to send an expression of sympathy call us at Mr. Bokay Flowers at 800-350-7251 and we will take good care of everything.

How to keep your roses from wilting!

Nix wilting roses in the bud. Extend the lifespan of roses with these simple tips:

First, if your roses arrived with plastic water tubes, remove them before arranging. Remove any leaves that will be under water, taking care not to cut through or scrape the green bark.

Then, re-cut stems by removing one to two inches with a sharp knife. Immediately after cutting, place roses in a clean, deep vase of water containing a flower food provided by your florist.

(Check the flower food solution daily and make sure to keep it full, clean and fresh. If the solution becomes cloudy, replace it entirely.)

Roses, actually all flowers, biggest enemy is bacteria. When the roses sit in water at room temperature, the water in the vase begins to form bacteria. This bacteria multiplies and hinders water uptake to the flower. The best advice I can give you is to change the water every day. Whether or not you have flower food, fresh water every day will result in a noticeable difference in how long the roses last. I can also recommend a drop or two of chlorine bleach to the water to help control bacteria, it will not harm the flowers.

Enjoy your roses and keep your roses in a cool place, out of direct sun and drafts.

Ten Reasons Why Local Florist's

Hand Delivered Flowers Are Best

1. Flowers delivered by mail are not temperature controlled while being shipped

2. Flowers delivered by mail are not hydrated and are out of water for days even if sent via overnight mail.

3. Flowers delivered by mail are left at the door regardless of the weather and can wind up being frozen or virtually cooked in the heat.

4. Finding a brown cardboard box on your front steps with flowers inside is not very elegant and not the same as having a flower delivery person hand deliver a beautiful flower arrangement.

5. Flowers that come in the mail need to be unpacked and assembled, this is just added work-we have all heard "some assembly required".

6. If you get flowers that were packed to be mailed you will never arrange them as nice as a local professional florist-why spend good money and have them look like supermarket flowers at best

7. You can not get flowers delivered the same day through the mail nor can you have a delivery timed in any way.

8. If you have a problem with the flowers they can not be replaced that same day.

9. Flowers that come in the mail still need to be conditioned that is they need to be cut properly and hydrated if not done properly they will not last or open or maybe never even look nice.

10. Flowers hand delivered locally by a local florist are done so with great care taken for every order while flowers sent in the mail are done in warehouse type facilities not by professional florists looking to make your order special.

Consumer reports did a test of the major online companies that send flowers by mail. I think they were right when they concluded that local florist delivered flowers are best. Give us a call or order online at www.MrBokay.com or www.MrBokay.net and we will get your flowers delivered the same day by a local florist.

I found this post online and thought it might be of interest.

Report: Shane Garrett - Ishop.com

Reported By: (Venice California )
This Online Florists Goes By Many Names If you want your flowers delivered, find a local florist in area of delivery! This was a Big Mistake. The flowers were not delivered. The URL I used is not important because the guy who runs it is continuously creating new domain names and starting new "companies". At the end of this report I will discuss identifying and contacting this party. As it turns out the flowers were not delivered because this guy is not a florist, just a guy that takes a lot of orders on the internet. He refunded my money and has been sending me spam ever since. For the last two years each time a holiday approaches I start receiving junk e-mails from half a dozen floral websites that are all owned by the same guy that failed to deliver for me two years ago.Obviously I am not going to order from any of this guy's websites again so I tried to get myself removed from his mailing lists. I was surprised to find that no matter which of his many addresses I sent a request to, the email was bounced back to me.Additionally, he does not like to answer his phone or return calls, althought his voicemail message indicates that I have the right number.I had previously thought that booking orders for flowers was a legitimate business. His strategy is to own as many florist websites as possible to catch as much business as possible and he will accept any order without considering whether the order can be filled or not.If you have already been ripped off by any of the following "businesses", then I have the owner's contact information for you. We’ve got tips on how to get your house ready for the big day:Choose seasonal flowers and plants.

Tired of hearing hired radio personalities malign local florists and frustrated with ProFlowers' continued negative marketing about brick and mortar flower shops, two Pennsylvania florists ordered a set of ProFlowers' roses online and chronicled the experience.

In addition to photographing the frozen flowers delivered to their home, they video taped the experience of opening the box of frozen flowers and uploaded it to YouTube.com, where the video was seen by more than 30,000 viewers. Needless to say, the folks at ProFlowers.com were unhappy that their delivery policy of leaving flowers on doorsteps when no one is home, despite freezing temperatures, received so much exposure.

Rather than actually fixing the problem by changing the delivery policy, ProFlowers.com hired an attorney to send the local florists a cease and desist order claiming trademark infringement.

The video has been removed from YouTube.com and the blog post about the frozen rose experience has been removed from the florists' site. To read more about this visit http://www.floristdetective.com/ and click on the Pro-flowers vs Florist link.

Consumer awareness of issues that can effect the flower purchasing experience isour mission. Would you use that venue next time?

The reason I ask is that I have lost many times on floral projects because the wedding venue sales staff push and even force you to use the "recommended" other vendor for all services. That company does not disclose that it is giving the kickback and in the contract states that the client has to use them for all services at that venue and is not allowed to bring in any outside floral vendors. This means if you want to use an outside florist; they will not allow it and the venue will back them up. They do not do a great job on everything. My contention is that the commission should be transparent and the client should not be forced into it.

I was invited to a wedding last weekend at one of the well known wedding venues in Westchester County that have resorted to under handed dealings that have forced many Brides to be forced to use the venues "recommended" Florists. The reasoning usually goes that these recommended florists know the venue and do a great job and the venue does not need to be concerned that anything will go wrong. What they fail to disclose is that the florist are paying THOUSANDS of dollars each and every month to these venues in order to be labeled "recommended" by the venue. Unfortunately, what most Brides do not realize is that they are paying hundreds and hundreds of extra dollars more for the privledge of using these florists. NOT because they are better, but because they are paying to be labeled "recommended"

A few months ago a Bride came in for a consultation. I had designed her brothers wedding flowers a few years earlier and they loved the flowers. Since she was getting married now, she decided to make an appointment. I found out that she was being married at the new Ritz-Carleton. She came in with a very specific centerpiece plan and asked if we could do it. She had already received a price from the "recommended" hotel florist. However, she was unhappy with the way she had been treated by this house florist. Without telling me her estimate from the other florist, I went to work getting her the best price for her wedding centerpieces. AND I DID. Thousands of dollars less than she had been quoted. So what was the problem? Simply the Hotel event planner was forcing her to use their "recommended" florist, with the excuse that they know the venue and would do superior work. It was blantantly obvious that the event planner and "recommended" florist had an "arrangement" that forced people to have to use their "recommended choice". This is unfair to YOU the customer because you are being forced to pay more for services without much in return. It effectively eliminates competition and you simply are forced to pay more. Consider your options carefully when signing a contract because many venues are now looking to make extra money off of you by forcing you to use their choices as if you haven't paid them enough for the privledge of having your affair there. If more people complained maybe it would put a stop to this practice.

Mr. Bokay has been recognized as a "Favorite Place on Google"

Mr. Bokay Flowers has been recognized by Google as a "Favorite Place" on the internet to shop.

So last week, The mail came and there was an envelope from Google. I thought it was just another advertisement flyer and so I waited until we were finished with an event to sit down and open the mail. What a pleasant surpise! We have been recognized as a "Favorite Place on Google" and we received a special packet with a sticker to place on our front door congratulating us for being a favorite place that folks search for on the internet.

Google identified less than 250,000 businesses in the U.S.A. as a "Favorite Place on Google" which is based on Google user's interactions with local business listings...and you the customer chose us! This selection represents less than 1% of the 28 million U.S. businesses so we are pretty psyched. Google stated that it "believes that our standards for selecting businesses are as selective or more selective than other companies which have run similar initiatives".

So a special thanks to allour customers who took the time to write reviews or searched for directions to find us or just wanted more information about us...we thank you over and over for taking the time to do that!

As a real local florist who actually designs and delivers on the same day, as well as a top florist in the nationwide FTD florist network - we are excited and this is a grand congratulations from Google. Any arrangement of flowers that expresses your gratitude and fits the recipient's personality is a great gift to send on this special day.If you're looking for flowers that send an especially eloquent message, you can select blooms to speak the "language of flowers." Each flower has a traditional meaning associated with it. Communicating with flowers was especially popular during the Victorian era, but many people keep the tradition alive today. Here are some flowers that may help you to communicate the message you want to share with a special mom in your life.

CARNATIONSPerhaps the most traditional Mother's Day Flower is the carnation. Pink carnations represent gratitude and love while red carnations signify admiration. White carnations are traditional flowers to give or wear in remembrance of a mother who is no longer living.

ROSESVery widely beloved blooms, roses of various colors convey a number of different meanings. A bouquet of mature rose blooms sends a message of gratitude. In white roses signify virtue, purity, and reverence. Yellow roses bespeak devotion. A rose symbolizes grace in a medium pink hue, gratitude in a dark pink color, and youthful joy in light pink.

SUNFLOWERS AND GERBERA DAISIESA bright and cheerful flower, the sunflower is a colorful addition to a bouquet. It also sends a message of adoration and respect. Gerbera daisies have a similarly joyful look in their myriad colors. Daisies are traditionally a symbol of beauty, and gerbera daisies also signify cheerfulness and playfulness.

TULIPSA bouquet of tulips can make a gift to brighten any mom's day. The message of tulips in general is love. More specifically, pink tulips signify caring and red tulips connote true love. Yellow tulips, as might be guessed from their appearance, bring a message of cheerful thoughts.

VIOLETSViolets signify faithfulness and devotion. The gift of a violet plant can provide a lasting reminder of your appreciation for a mother's devotion.

ORCHIDSWith their exotic and majestic appearance, orchids symbolize love, refinement, and beauty. The orchid is also a Chinese symbol for "many children."

LILIESParticularly beloved by many mothers, lilies come in a number of different varieties. A white lily connotes purity and majesty. The day lily is a Chinese symbol for motherhood. Calla lilies stand for beauty.

GIVING MOTHER'S DAY FLOWERSWhether you're choosing a gift of flowers for your mother, a friend, the mother of your children, or any other mom, help her celebrate this special day with flowers that reflect just how much she means to you this Mother's Day.

Example of how "order gatherers" cheat you!

On April 2, 2010 we received an order through the Bloomnet system (owned and operated by 1-800-Flowers) from Kay's Flowers (a known order gatherer) for an order of Roses and a mylar balloon to be delivered on that day. Our driver delivered the order and we decided to leave it at the door because the card message indicated it was for an anniversary. We find out a few days later that the sender of the order wanted the flowers delivered April 8, 2010 on his anniversary. He actually e-mailed us a copy of his confirmation. He unwittingly ordered through an "order gatherer" (an order gatherer is a website that is run by a company that does not actually design the flowers, they only gatherer the order for a florist to fill) website that he did not know and spent nearly $90.00 on the flowers. We received the order and it was skimmed down to $64.00. In addition the order gatherer will receive approximately another $15.00 for having sent the order through the Bloomnet system. So the "order gatherer" skimmed nearly $40.00 on this order and we the filling florist that did all the work, will receive under $50.00. This is the way it works and this is the reason you will never get full value on an order that is placed through any order gatherer. Buyer beware. In addition, they refused to pay to redeliver the flowers on the date he wanted April 8, 2010. Always deal with a reputable Florist, they are your "buds" in the flower business.

Flowers as a Secretary Day "Thank You"!

This year Secretaries Day is April 21. Bill. He was assigned to a church in Port Chester called Holy Rosary. Fr. Bill was a great idea man and one day we were discussing ways to raise some money at the church. One idea was the selling of blessed palm crosses to the parishioners. I made up a sample and the priests would display in the church during lent and they would take orders. In the beginning we sold probably under a 100 crosses, but over the next few years the numbers increased and we were selling close to 300 palm crosses. Each cross was hand made and if anyone has ever made them, extremely labor intensive. We delivered beautiful and fresh palm crosses at a reasonable price for years. Many years ago, Fr. Bill was reassigned and many priests have come and gone over the years, but all kept us, the local florist and local business making these palm crosses. We charged a reasonable price for these palm crosses and carefully examined each one to make sure the palm was fresh and the product looked good. The church had increased the number of crosses over the last few years and had ordered over 400 pieces last year. Now, the wisdom of the new priest was to go outside of the local business community and purchase these crosses from an outside wholesaler that sells them cheaper. I consider this church, that I have provided my services for so many years and have given discounts and donations, would so callously reject our services in order to save a couple of bucks. Whatever happened to supporting your local businesses? What should my response be the next time a fund raiser from the church asks for a donation? The fact of the matter is that I was involved in starting the palm cross selling, which decreased the number of crosses I sold retail from my shop, because many of my customers bought them through the church instead of buying them from me. I believe no good deed goes unpunished and some people are very short sighted that they just don't see the big picture.

Port Chester, NY March 1, 2010 Press Release
Port Chester Florist & Greenhouse, Inc., a Local Florist in Port Chester is pleased to announce its newly designed Web site. "More of your flower purchasing dollar goes toward flowers when you buy from a local florist," says Della Mura. "The customer has much more control over the transaction when he or she is dealing directly with the florist who will be creating the arrangement. That's not something you will get when you order flowers from a national chain."About Port Chester Florist & Greenhouse- Port Chester Florist & Greenhouse, Inc. is located at 141 South Regent Street in Port Chester, NY. Port Chester Florist & Greenhouse, Inc. has been in business since 1973 and has been owned by the Della Mura family since 1993. And, they also claim that, your FLOWERS are picked fresh and immediately after you’ve placed your order!

Well, DON’T YOU BELIEVE IT because IT’S SIMPLY NOT TRUE!

While you might save a few dollars, the only reason for that is, BECAUSE THE RECIPIENT HAS TO DO ALL OF THE WORK! All of their FARM DIRECT FLOWERS ARE NEVER ARRANGED even though they appear to be in their pictures. And so, the few dollars you might save is only because a PROFESSIONAL FLORIST didn’t arrange your flowers properly! The people who get those gifts must do all of that labor-intensive work themselves. Also, amateurs are never able to achieve the same result as A PROFESSIONAL FLORAL DESIGNER nor even get close to what appeared in that picture.

Also, you CANNOT SEND those UNARRANGED FLOWERS to Hospitals, Nursing Homes, Funeral Homes, Elderly People, Special Events, Parties, or anywhere else where there would be NO ONE TO PROPERLY HANDLE and ARRANGE them for those recipients.

SO, WHEN ARE THEIR FLOWERS REALLY PICKED? Fact is that, just like WE REAL FLORISTS, those companies use the same farm sources and modes of transport that we do. Starting in South America in the countries of Columbia and Ecuador or Holland, Israel, or New Zealand, all of those flowers are packed in large commercial market boxes and flown that way to Miami, a major distribution hub for the United States, Canada, and the rest of the World.

Once in Miami, the boxes of flowers for REAL FLORISTS are placed on either Aircraft or in Refrigerated trucks and shipped to their intended destinations. When our flowers arrive, that’s when the real work begins since; Flowers are stressed after loosing 20% to 30% of their water content during the shipping process. Our PROFESSIONAL HANDLING PROCESS includes the removal of all foliage below the water line as well as all Thorns on the rose stems. After our initial cleaning process, all of our flowers are properly RE-HYDRATED using a commercial preservative, which extends the life of our flowers substantially. After 8 to 24 hours of re-hydrating, FLORIST FLOWERS are placed into our coolers at a temperature of between 34 to 36 degrees for hardening. Have you ever seen a head of wilted lettuce after it’s lost 30% of its moisture content?

It is only after that point; A PROFESSIONAL FLORIST is ready to arrange your flowers properly and professionally, which then, allows for a longer vase life of freshness for such a highly perishable and delicate gift from nature and for that very special person in your life.

With the FARM DIRECT product, the commercial boxes of flowers are broken down into much smaller order units in Miami and with little or no special care given. They are then placed on the same planes (or trucks), which our commercial boxes are usually on too. Upon arrival in your State or City, your boxed flowers are placed onto FedEx Trucks, which are NOT COOLED! And, at some point in time, your box of UNARRANGED FLOWERS is left at someone’s front door when they are not home because, THAT’S THEIR RULES. It doesn’t matter if the temperature outside is BELOW FREEZING or, if it’s over 80 degrees, which can either DAMAGE YOUR FLORAL GIFT.KILL OR SEVERELY

A REAL FLORIST would never do that and we always check weather conditions and follow up with telephone calls or even leave it in the hands of a reliable neighbor. We simply won't just leave it at the door for the sake of completing a delivery.

So, you all believed their story of; When your order comes in, someone actually goes out into the flower field to PICK IT FRESH JUST FOR YOU? Sorry Folks! It’s JUST A NICE STORY but with NO BASIS in either FACT or REALITY! Picking cucumbers for PICKLING would better describe them.

Lastly, at checkout, CHECK OUT those EXTRA CHARGES for EXPRESS SHIPPING plus THE VASE THEY’LL NEED TO ARRANGE YOUR FLOWERS IN! You’ll realize THEY’RE NO BIG DEAL, especially when YOUR SOMEONE SPECIAL has to DO ALL OF THAT EXTRA WORK!

Valentine's Day is a few days away! Here comes the snow!@\#

With Valentine's Day fast approaching, it comes as no surprise that a huge winter snowstorm is approaching even faster. Fortunately, the storm will arrive a few days before the holiday giving everyone a chance to dig out of the mess and get back to normal, hopefully. I've been in the flower business for over 35 years, and I can remember lots of snowstorms right on Valentine's Day. One year in particular, a huge blizzard hit the region and Valentine's Day came to a halt. A few days later, Valentine's Week was announced, but it never really took off. Everyone wants to celebrate on February 14. So snow, sleet, etc. will not stop the flowers from being delivered this Valentine's Day. We're like the post office, we get the job done. So if you can not make it to the store, visit our web sites or give us a call.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://mrbokay.blogspot.com/2010/02/valentines-day-is-few-days-away-here.html' title='Valentine's Day is a few days away! Before you hit the 'buy' button, stop and read the entire product description or you may be in for a surprising disappointment.

Instead of sending an impressive, professionally designed, hand delivered vase of romantic roses that's the envy of the office, you might be buying a cardboard-wrapped grower's bunch delivered in a box - a gift that requires your own special sweetheart to clean, condition, re-cut and arrange it.

When no one's home, these FedEx, UPS and DHL delivered flowers may be left at the door despite freezing temperatures or extreme heat conditions anywhere in the US.
For the freshest presentation of roses and other flowers, trust your local florist to professionally arrange and personally deliver not only roses, but a wide variety of romantic flowers like tulips, orchids and lilies to delight that very special someone.
Just how much 'WOW' do you want to send?
Website flower arrangement images can make size comparisons a challenge - especially when shopping for roses and rose arrangements. Pages display designs in the same format and image dimensions, generally fill each frame with the product, and may give the impression that the overall dimensions of adjacent photos are similar in size.
While many florist sites include approximate arrangement dimensions along with the product descriptions, some do not - and leave you to guess.
For metrically-challenged US consumers, below is a simple conversion chart that displays roses in both centimeters (the way they are often sold) and inches for easy flower size comparisons. Please note that these sizes and descriptions are based on average measurements and no floral industry-wide grades and standards exist for terms like 'medium stem' or 'long stemmed' roses. It pays to ask each merchant directly for specific dimensions if overall appearance matters.

Often described as
Length in centimeters
Length in inches
Notes*
Sweetheart or
Petite Roses
30-40 cm
11.75-15.75
Buds are generally ½ inch diameter and approx. 1 inch high
Medium Stem Roses
40 cm
15.75 inches
Buds are generally 1inch in diameter and 1.5 - 2 inches high
Medium Stem Roses
50 cm
19.75 inches
Buds are generally 1 inch in diameter and 1.5 - 2 inches high
Long stemmed or Long Stem Roses
60 cm
23.5 inches
Buds are generally 1.5 inches in diameter and 2 - 2.5 inches high
Premium Long stemmed or Long stemmed Roses
70 - 80 cm
27.5 inches and up
Buds are generally 2 inches in diameter and 2.5 - 3 inches high
* Bud sizes and flower heights will vary between varieties and colors. You will not however find a lot of insider information about the best variety of yellow roses to buy. Some varieties of yellow roses that are sold by online florists or retail florists are simply just the bottom of the barrel while others are absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately most don’t know what to look for or what to ask for. Most people just order yellow roses. Would you just buy sneakers or would you look into the details? If you want to order yellow roses and know exactly what you are getting, we are going to guide you with some insider information so you can buy yellow roses like a pro.

The cheaper yellow roses tend to open very fast but have a very short shelf life. The cheaper roses are not very dense and the petals seem to just fall off and within about 4 days your flowers are garbage worthy. When I say cheaper I don’t necessarily mean for the consumer as it is the retailer that get them cheaper and many times sells them at the same price as a premium rose. Some of these varieties that I would suggest avoiding are the Golda variety of yellow roses. These yellow roses are really only good for event work where quick opening roses for the day is the most important factor. They are many times misused and put into a rose arrangements like a dozen roses and sent out for delivery.
Aalsmere Gold Yellow Rose

If you want a medium yellow rose that is hearty and very meaty you really only have one choice. The Skyline rose has a very dense petal count, takes a little time to open and far outlasts its competitors. The best yellow rose in my opinion is the Skyline Rose.

Skyline Yellow Rose-Editors Choice #1 Yellow Rose
If you want a nice yellow rose with a touch of red on the edge you may want to try the Texas Yellow Rose. This is a good solid rose and it offers some of the red edge that people sometimes want.Texas Yellow Rose
Today, yellow roses are sign of friendship and joy. From the days of only being able to choose from red roses, pink roses, yellow roses, and white roses, they have evolved, perfected in a sense, and they are available now in just about any color you can imagine and many combos of colors. What color is your love?
We have the rose to express that perfectly. This months’ suggestions for Valentines and beyond. A few of my favorite varieties, Red Freedom Roses, large headed with many petals, vibrant in color and the classic rose shape. Attache Roses, the hottest of pinks and a fragrance that fills a room with the sweet aroma of a spring morning. Skyline Roses, its’ not blue, it is a lemony yellow that shares all of the attributes of our Freedom rose. Cool Water, beside a great name its color is an all time favorite, a true delicate lavender color with a subtle lavender fragrance. Jade Roses, a soft green, not much fragrance but its color conveys tranquility.

Ten reasons why local florist hand delivered flowers are best!

Ten Reasons Why Local Florist Hand Delivered Flowers Are Best

5. Flowers that come in the mail need to be unpacked and assembled, this is just added work-we have all heard some assembly required.

6. If you get flowers that were packed to be mailed you will never arrange them as nice as a local professional florist-why spend good money and have them look like supermarket flowers at best.

10. Flowers hand delivered locally by a local florist are done so with great care taken for every order while flowers sent in the mail are done in warehouse type facilities not by professional florists looking to make your order special .

Consumer reports did a test of the major online companies that send flowers by mail. I think they were right when they concluded that local florist delivered flowers are best.

Give us a call or order online at http://www.mrbokay.com/ or http://www.mrbokay.net/ and we will get your flowers delivered the same day by a local florist.
